In line with the current trend to revisit classical myth and legend in the light of the woman's experience (e.g. Madeline Miller's Circe (2018), and Pat Barker's The Silence of the Girls (2018)), Savery has questioned the centrality of the character of Narcissus in psychoanalytic thinking, viewing Echo and the disorder she exemplifies as a significant but neglected theme in psychoanalytic thinking. Drawing on critical theory, she also suggests that this neglect is the result of the phallocentric, patriarchal dominance of male theorists, who may have identified more fully with the male character than with the almost-silenced nymph Echo.
