The quality of the clinical encounter with Julia comes across clearly despite the omission of much detail for reasons of confidentiality. I was impressed by the
therapist's awareness of their own affective responses (King, 1978) and the respect for silences. The work in the clinician's mind, particularly of receptivity, listening and containment is sensitive and clear.
It is interesting that Julia, troubled since childhood, seeks help in her late 40s. Why at this point? Why have her longstanding depression and low self-esteem become more unbearable? Perhaps she fears being on her own for the rest of her life? She seems aware of her pattern of relating. Does Julia also feel cut off and despairing about herself? I wondered about her disturbed, rather restricted and futile relationship with self and the other.
As the youngest of three children with a mother whom she experienced as changeable, sometimes attuned, and other times terrifying, Julia experienced her father as more stable and capable of intimacy. However, he was often absent and passive to the point of being weak in terms of protecting Julia and her siblings from her mother's disturbance. To me, this seemed especially painful: the missing caress, the somatic communication, experience of touch an
