Almost half the material offered is Charlotte's life history and the history of her analysis. There is then a paragraph summary of a Monday session in which we hear no words from the analyst, followed by an excerpt from a Tuesday session. The first words we hear from the analyst are more than halfway through the material provided.
I write ‘the analyst’ but this figure's own identity seems to be in doubt: in the excerpt from Tuesday, they are identified as ‘therapist’. I understand this as a function of Charlotte's not being able to allow herself to perceive the analyst functioning as an analyst; this evokes an anxiety in the analyst in relation to their identity and role.
Both analyst and analysis are seemingly effaced, as though the analysis had already ended. There seemed to be nearly overwhelming projection into the analyst of Charlotte's ambivalence and resistance, to the extent that the analyst also comes to speak of the analysis as though it were approaching its end.
