This paper approaches love as an inherently creative psychic state rich with developmental potential, the importance of which has been underrepresented in psychoanalytic thinking about couples. It is proposed that attention to emotionally intense currents within couple relationships should have a more considered place in psychoanalytic couple psychotherapy. Enlisting the thinking of Winnicott, Meltzer, Green, Milner, and others, this paper explores the value of thinking about powerfully felt experiences of the other in working psychoanalytically with couples. How do we as psychoanalytic couple psychotherapists hold a place for the creative, aesthetic, and non-realistic as we also help couples develop capacities for mature, differentiated object relating? Some technical implications for work with couples are discussed.
