Dr Charles Enfield died peacefully on 9 June, 2016 at Saint Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by his family and close friends. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in October of 1927, Charles graduated in Medicine in 1950 from the University of Witwatersrand. He completed his Diploma in Psychiatry at the University of London in 1966 and became of member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1972. He had a career which spanned sixty years, during which time he worked as a general practitioner, (employed by the British Medical Association to run general practices that were in difficulty due either to the illness or malfunctioning of the incumbent GP), an industrial medical officer (with Standard Oil of New Jersey), and ultimately trained as both an adult and child psychiatrist. This career change was influenced in part by Michael Balint whose groups he attended.
After training in psychiatry, Charles developed a special interest in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, especially as it could be applied to helping couples and families. As a part of his post-graduate training, Charles underwent his own psychoanalysis while training at the Tavistock Clinic
