On 16th April, 2021, our esteemed and much loved colleague, Jeannie Milligan, passed away under tragic circumstances, in a house fire, at the age of seventy-one years.
Trained in social work and, subsequently, in psychoanalytical psychotherapy at the British Association of Psychotherapists, Jeannie worked for many years at the Portman Clinic in London and, subsequently, in the Adolescent Department at the Tavistock Clinic. With tremendous creativity, she combined her knowledge of psychoanalysis and social work and hosted a special discussion group on the psychodynamics of troubled families. At a time when most of the family therapists at the Tavistock Clinic practised from a systemic perspective, Jeannie's championship of classical psychoanalytical ideas proved unique and most welcome.
In addition to her impeccably thoughtful and compassionate contributions as a clinician, Jeannie also collaborated with the media by appearing on Woman's Hour and by providing insightful quotations for major broadsheets about a range of psychological topics.
Back in 2010, Jeannie Milligan very kindly accepted the invitation to join the Editorial Board of our journal, Couple and Family Psychoanalysis, in view of her expertise in treating both parental couples and families from a psychodynamic perspective. She proved of great support to the journal and to the inaugural editor, Molly Ludlam, and even offered helpful recommendations for improving the cover design.
Out of hours, Jeannie Milligan brought immense pleasure to all of the staff and students at the Tavistock Clinic by having starred for many years as the lead in the annual Tavistock Clinic pantomime, singing and dancing and acting with sheer brilliance and utter captivation. A woman of tremendous glamour and vivacity, a loyal colleague, and a loving friend, she will be deeply missed by so many people in our profession.
