This article views the film Retour à Séoul (Davy Chou, 2022) through a clinical lens. It explores how a core relationship conflict, heightened by the experience of adoption, can affect identity and coupling in adult relationships, tracking how the adoptee in the film responds to the ambiguity and anxiety it creates. After considering the nature of the core conflict, it focuses on denial, protest, sexualisation, and control as responses to loss. A speculative concluding section considers possible implications for couple and family relationships.
