The following article charts my exploration of compassion-focused therapy as a psychotherapist working with an adoptive couple. My intention is to focus attention on encouraging the cultivation of compassion between partners, therefore enhancing the couple's capacity to relate. As a parallel process, the lens through which parents view their adoptive children may also become more compassionate, attuned, and empathic. Another area of interest concerns the question of how the tools and techniques of compassion-focused therapy may be helpful in promoting “self-compassion” and reducing secondary trauma for clients and therapists alike.
