Martin Stanton has put together a book on a series of lectures presented at the French Institute in London in 1994. Out of Order: Clinical Work & Unconscious Process turns out to be quite an orderly presentation on basic psychoanalytic topics such as theory and the patient, resistance, the otherness of symptoms, varieties of subjectivity in the consulting room, transference, interpretation and construction, trauma, afterwardsness, sublimation, and technique.
At first glance such an ambitious itinerary may scare you away and leave you wondering what on earth the author has left out. Far from that, the book conveyed to this reader a delicate sense of balance. Indeed, this Tour de France covers a great deal of territory at high speed! Picture yourself meandering through some vineyards of the likes of Lacan, Lagache, Laplanche, and others often forgotten like Ferenczi and Jung. Optional additions to this grand tour include a selection of footnotes well worth pedalling through In them you will find samples of Bergson, Debord, Lyotard, Barnett Newman, and others.
