We apologize for an error on page 342 in Sandra Palef's review of Basic Ideas Reconsidered: Progress in Self Psychology, in the previous issue of this journal. Part of the paragraph should have read, “I am not sure that any of the proponents of frustration in this book would disagree with Bacal's idea that, while frustration is inevitable, it should not be seen as the rule or goal. The only legitimate goal is understanding. And as Shelley Doctors points out in her discussion of the Shanes' paper, this includes the analyst's self-awareness of the meaning her [not his] responsiveness has for herself. The analyst's own need to respond to a patient in a particular manner may get in the way of understanding him.”
