Donald Paul Harris died at home with his family on Sunday, September 8, 2002, at the age of 71 years. He obtained his M.D. from McGill University in 1957 and went on to complete a residency in psychiatry at McGill, with a specialization in child psychiatry. He received his psychoanalytic training at the Montreal Psychoanalytic Institute and then worked at the Montreal Children's Hospital. In 1970 he moved to Kingston, Ontario, to take up an appointment at Queen's University where he became the director of Psychotherapy Training. He continued to work in child psychiatry and was the acting director of the Beechgrove Children's Centre for a number of years. In later years he became the director of the Queen's University Department of Psychiatry, Outpatient Clinic. Throughout his career he maintained an active practice in adult psychoanalysis, primarily with those working in health care. He retired as professor of psychiatry in 1993 and maintained a part-time practice in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy until shortly before his death.
Dr. Harris was a strong and vocal advocate of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy throughout the many years when a primarily biological model was being advanced in psychiatry, and psychotherapy was very much out of favour. He was a committed and compassionate physician, less interested in academic advancement than in teaching and direct client services. He is deeply missed by all who knew him personally and by those who had the privilege of learning from him.
