Case material is used to explore the clinical and theoretical aspects of greed as it manifests in the psychoanalytic situation. Excessive splitting and reliance on projective identification are part of a paranoid-schizoid cycle in which the ego searches for an ideal object and an idealized self. Greed, fuelled by oral aggression and envy, attacks the fragile ideal object and turns it into a retaliatory enemy. Resulting phantasies of loss, persecution, and emotional starvation are examined.
