The author describes one aspect of her psychoanalytic psychotherapy. During her therapy, she read extensively in the psychoanalytic literature, especially the work of D. W. Winnicott. Winnicott's ideas shaped her understanding of her early experiences, and therefore of her difficulties, as well as of the therapeutic process in which she was engaged. Overall, the therapy allowed her to shift from a bleak view of her capacities and the possibilities available to her, to experience herself, her creativity, the world separate from herself, including the world of ideas separate from her own, and to relate these inner and outer worlds so as to feel a sense of belonging. Eventually, she began to develop her own ideas about the therapeutic process in a playful engagement with Winnicott's ideas about the development of the child.
