Deadly Narcissism in Cronenberg's Dead Ringers

Dead Ringers, a film directed by David Cronenberg, depicts the tragic story of twin brothers Elliot and Beverly Mantle, two gynecologists who share a fascination with the insides of female bodies, explored through surgery and experimentation but not through knowledge based on intimate relationships.

From childhood on, the brothers are involved in a highly symbiotic and narcissistic relationship with each other, resulting in confusion in self–object differentiation as well as distortions in intrapsychic reality at a superego level. In a Mahlerian sense they have never really been psychologically born. This equilibrium is threatened and eventually destroyed by Beverly's attempt to form a separate love relationship with a woman.
