Child psychoanalysis has been an integral component of the teaching and clinical programs at the schools of medicine of McGill University and the University of Montreal, and in the Montreal mental health network in general, since Dr. Clifford Scott initiated psychoanalytic training in Canada in 1955. The early pioneers worked hard to maintain a critical mass of child analysts to sustain the discipline. However, the physical, emotional, and financial rigours of the process from the analyst's perspective, and the lack of support within the local academic milieu, the high costs, strain of insight for both the children and parents, disruptions of their academic and occupational calendars, and the alleged rapid relief derived from medication, restrict its popularity. As the youth and/or their parents still strive to relieve the suffering associated with psychic conflict, psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy has emerged as an alternative, with or without medication. It is impossible to predict the future of child analysis in Montreal.
