The notion of anticipatory idea (Erwartungvorstellung) is presented as a step in the process of interpretation. Waiting as part of the idea is considered from the point of view of the analyst and that of the patient. Three aspects of anticipatory ideas are discussed as proposed by Freud followed by a larger view on the analytic process as supported by some broader meaning of the notion and its vicissitude in analysis. The.fit between anticipatory ideas and interpretation is discussed within the context of establishing conditions under which interpretation is made possible following some work with the patient's associations.
