This paper explores prevalent attitudes toward psychoanalytic research within the psychoanalytic community. It describes a profound ambivalence about the importance of research in psychoanalysis, and the underlying conflict between the awareness of the importance of research contributions to our field, on the one hand, and fears of the impact of research on aspects of cherished theories and traditional assumptions, on the other. There are different ways in which the dynamics of this conflict are influencing the attitude toward research approaches and findings in the boundary fields of psychoanalysis with neurobiology, with culture and ideology, and with the psychotherapies. These differences are explored in the context of significant findings presently available and their reception by the psychoanalytic profession. The paper concludes with a plea for radical changes in our educational system geared to foster the development of research scientists in addition to the emphasis on high-level clinical training.
