The authors describe some of their experiences as a group of psychoanalysts involved in the planning of a large multinational research project. The proposed study is a comparative randomized controlled trial of three active treatments, including psychoanalysis, with supportive clinical management as a control. The authors' main contribution to the planning has been to write research guidelines for the psychoanalytic arm of the project. They document some aspects of the process involved in the writing of these guidelines and outline the table of contents of the guidelines. The authors conclude with a detailed discussion of the unexpected benefits for their work as psychoanalysts as a result of their involvement in the research planning. These benefits mirror the experiences of other groups of psychoanalysts involved in systematic research projects.
