In this paper, I am going to argue that there is a “typical dream” not represented in Freud's catalogue of typical dreams or in subsequent psychoanalytic writing on typical dreams. This dream, dreamt during an analysis, represents the patient's developmental story as the analysis has helped the patient understand it, and it places the patient's relationship with the analyst in that story. The image of the analysand–analyst relationship in the dream shows the love that the analysand expects from the analyst—a reprise of the love the analysand once expected from the most important caretaker in his or her childhood. The paper will explore three variants on this typical dream, keying them to types of disappointments in the expectation to be loved.
