A woman in her mid-thirties had spent close to half her life in psychoanalysis. Not only did she have little to show for this time in analysis, she was also adamant that she was not going to change. Change meant giving up certain fantasies incapable of fulfillment, particularly reversing time and forcing her mother to become the wished-for doting mother of infancy that she never was, in reality. Despite a long analytic process and an “insight mania” termination of analysis was not her goal. She maintained a perverse resistance because of her intolerance of the painful affects inevitable during the working-through process and her narcissistic investment in her pathology. After many years the analyst proposed termination in an effort to help the patient accept reality and motivate her to change. The reasons for suggesting termination and the termination process are described, along with the psychoanalytic techniques necessitated by such patients.
