Character, the film, depicts the dramatic history of a young man abandoned at birth who later rivals his father for power and surpasses him. Using psychoanalytic techniques, the authors approach a way of critically re-viewing and rethinking a cultural or aesthetic object, comparing the narrative theme in Character to Sophocles' Oedipus Rex. The evocative power of Character appears to lie with its portrayal of a family, the unique unit of early formative experience and development, and how conflict between self and other shapes our movement through life.
