The Psychodynamics that Lead to Violence: Part 1: The Case of the Chronically Violent Delinquent

The aim of this two-part paper is to present two models that attempt to understand the psychodynamics that lead to the use of violence in chronically violent delinquents and in ordinary citizens who face extraordinary social circumstances, such as genocide, terrorism, and cultic violence. In this first part, the psychodynamics that concern chronically violent delinquents are presented. Integrating concepts developed through the years by major psychoanalytic writers, the forces and counter-forces that interact in the delinquent's mind are described with a view to understand the recourse to violence. Ten elements are seen as interacting. The first consists of relational trauma early on in life that gives rise to envy, the search for an idealized object, and the creation of a bad object. If the child is also submitted to maltreatment, he or she may resort to identification with the aggressor that eventually gives rise to an exacerbation of grandiose fantasies, the reversal of the predominance of the superego in favour of the ideal ego, and the presence of a counter-phobic attitude. The denial of the need for the object is further associated to the use of manic defences, which in turn contribute to the presence of an identificatory disengagement. The specific interaction of these ten elements is seen as giving rise to violence.
