The paper explores planned separations initiated by the analyst during treatment. It is addressed to participants in a conference at which the author was a speaker and makes use of clinical material from the sessions of patients who would have been seen on the day of the conference. A comparison is drawn between the effects of these separations and those described by Marcel Proust in a section of Remembrance of Things Past.
The author examines his own responses to the separation, juxtaposing his distress about what he is leaving behind, with the excitement of attending the conference. He reminds the audience of its complicity: they, too, have abandoned their patients to be at the conference.
Learning something that may compensate for the pain inflicted on patients, audience, and oneself is the major source of reparation. In a separate section, the author discusses some reflections on technique and a thera-peutic credo prompted by the earlier-described clinical material.
