The author explores the nature of the anxiety that can paralyze a writer and make it impossible to begin or to proceed. On the basis of a discussion of the sensuous quality of language, the author considers the oscillation between primary and secondary modes of experiencing entailed in the creative use of language and the way in which regressive anxieties having to do with separation, differentiation, and aggression can result in creative inhibitions. Illustrating her argument with excerpts from a clinical analysis, the author draws a parallel between the creative work of the writer and the creative work of analysis, suggesting that in both cases it is the presence of a good-enough object that permits the author/analysand to proceed in the face of psychic dangers.
