This paper examines the technical value of analytic contact—a clinical concept that can bring balance to the current crisis in the field of psychoanalysis. Rather than perpetuate the ongoing debates over defining what is psychoanalysis by elements such as frequency, diagnosis, analyzability, use of the couch, and duration of treatment, the concept of analytic contact comes back to Freud's original emphasis: helping those mentally ill individuals find freedom from their psychological confinement.
Using clinical material, this paper will illustrate the utility of returning to an object-relational clinical focus, rather than an emphasis on external criteria. The case material includes work with couples to show the broad clinical reach of psychoanalytic work if it is defined by analytic contact and the clinical situation rather than excessively rigid and dogmatic restrictions based on political, territorial, and theoretical arguments. Analytic contact brings the psychoanalytic approach back to its role as a powerful healing tool available to a wide range of patients seeking refuge from crippling mental problems. The procedure can be defined as psychoanalytic when analytic contact is said to have occurred in a consistent and meaningful manner over time, creating a mutative psychoanalytic process.
