An Inquiry into the Alpha Function

Wilfred R. Bion deliberately maintained the ambiguity of the term alpha function, in order to avoid a premature saturation of a variable. The author intends to explore the possible meanings of this term, when applied to an inquiry of the relationships between semiotics and psychoanalysis, the semi-otic structure of the mind, and the process of early semiotic development. The results show a possible fruitful articulation of Bion s thought with the semiotic vertex and theories of primary fusional narcissism. The term alpha function, however, remains unsaturated and ready for application to other fields.

Wilfred R. Bion a préservé intentionnellement l'ambiguïté du terme fonction alpha, afin d'éviter une saturation prématuré d'une variable. L'auteur de cet article a l'intention d'explorer les sens possibles de ce terme, en s'appli-quant a la recherche de la relation entre la sémiologie et la psychanalyse, la structure sémiotique de l'esprit et le processus du développement sémiotique du bébé. Les résultats indiquent une possible articulation féconde entre la pensée de Bion, le point de vue sémiotique et les théories du narcissisme primaire fusionnel. Néanmoins le terme fonction alpha reste non saturé et disponible pour être appliqué a autres champs de recherche.
