The publication of another issue of CJP/RCP is always a happy moment, but there are sometimes reasons it can also be rather sad. This is one of those occasions: our beloved Brian Robertson has completed his term as editor-in-chief (2005-2009).
Brian's unique style of leadership will be sorely missed by all the journal staff. His retirement was marked at the last Board meeting in June by an outpouring of affectionate ambivalence. We gave him an exquisite Inuit carving of a bird just on the verge of taking flight, to symbolize our well wishes for his new-found freedom. Brian's inspiring and motivating presence on the Board will continue, however, and we are all grateful for this. My term as associate editor under his tutelage has been a life-changing experience and I am sure that all those who share the task of producing the journal/revue, including Louise Carignan, my predecessor, will agree that Brian's retirement as chief is a significant loss.
In this regard, I would like especially to mention Mena Iaciofano, whom I know feels Brian's departure very keenly. As our tireless executive assistant, she has flourished under Brian's leadership, inspiring the rest of us in the process. An excellent editorial team has developed under Brian's direction, and Mena's contribution has been exemplary.
Another reason for sadness on the occasion of this new issue of our journal/revue is the recent passing of its eminent founding editor, Eva Lester. The deep sentiments we all feel over this loss have been most effectively transformed by our specially invited guest editors, Deborah Zack and Mary Kay O'Neil, into the main feature of this issue, a special section titled “In Memory of Eva Lester,” which highlights her exceptional contribution to psychoanalytic research and thought.
