The author reviews Freudian theory in reference to the love-hate pair, and also examines the works of other authors who have investigated the subject of hate, such as Winnicott, McDougall, and Galdstone. On the basis of a clinical case of a young female patient who intensely hated most people, she postulates this hate as a support for a labile psychic apparatus in a family atmosphere unable to provide containment or care-giving The author also discusses some technical aspect in relation to the patient's attack on the setting, describing how humour can be used as an element to enable interpretation.
