In this paper, Dr. Ferro situates his work within the history of psychoanalysis and also in relation to more recent developments since Bion, notably the Barangers' concept of the “analytic field.” The central focus of this approach is on dreaming, understood in terms of Bion's concepts of transformation, beta elements, and alpha function. The analytic session is conceived as a dream process that converges and clashes in the dynamic field of the analytic relationship. Various possibilities of this model are explored with detailed clinical examples, giving special emphasis to narrative and film metaphors such as plot, characters, and casting. The implications of this approach for technique are also explored.
