This paper is based on the text of a case presentation delivered to the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society Annual Congress by Dr. Ferro in Toronto, June 2010. The clinical material illustrates an innovative and productive method of working with a patient who is not very introspective and finds it difficult to acknowledge aggressive feelings. Dr. Ferro shows how working intuitively at the level of metaphor and narrative helps to overcome resistance to emotional insight and growth in such patients. Instead of using interpretation to make statements about the transference or the patient's state of mind, Dr. Ferro engages the patient in a playful exploration of how reports of everyday life are used to communicate the patient's “casting” of characters in unconscious phantasy processes. The theory behind the method illustrated in this report is described in more detail by Dr. Ferro in other publications, including “L'Action thérapeutique,” which appears elsewhere in this issue. An English version of that paper can be found on our website, together with a French version of this one.
