My good friend and colleague Richard Karmel entered psychoanalytic training at the Canadian Institute of Psychoanalysis (QE Branch) in 1977 and graduated in 1984. Already an established psychologist at the Montreal General Hospital, Richard was making a reputation for himself as an expert in psychological testing with specific emphasis on the interpretation of Rorschach protocols that he would pass on to students in the Internship Program, which he ultimately ended up directing. Since his passing, countless students have contacted me to laud Richard's influence in their careers in the testing area. As well, over the years, this internship in the Psychology Department became a magnet for PhD students arriving from numerous U.S. and Canadian universities wishing to receive a type of psychoanalytically based psychotherapy and testing training that is unique to North America.
On the psychoanalytic society front, Richard was the ultimate promoter for the creation of an interface between psychoanalysis and interested members of the mental health community and the public. His tireless efforts in this area included his active leadership as director of both the Day in Psychoanalysis and the Psychoanalytic Film Series sponsored by the Quebec English Branch. The Quebec English Branch recently honoured Richard's achievements, when he received a special merit award recognizing his contributions in expanding the base of psychoanalytic interest in the community.
