EDITOR'S NOTE AS Steven Rosenbloom so eloquently describes in his moving obituary (p. 209), Richard Karmel was the “ultimate promoter … of the interface” between psychoanalysis, art, culture, and the community. Dr. Karmel also reached out to our francophone colleagues, even persuading them to compose in English. The following paper by Jacques Mauger was commissioned by Richard in the mid-1990s for a psychoanalytic conference he organized on the composer Richard Schumann. Dr. Mauger has offered the unpublished draft of his original presentation as a tribute to Richard. The emotional themes and theoretical issues raised by Dr. Mauger powerfully evoke the existential richness and human complexity of our feelings and thoughts in response to the loss of a valued colleague.
