Winnicott is traditionally viewed as somewhat at odds with Freudian meta-psychology. This paper is aimed at showing how the Freudian roots are actually noticeable in his thinking and how a close reading of some of his papers allows for a conceptual fine-tuning of the notion of libido and of the sexual drives. In so doing, the author also puts Winnicott in a productive dialogue with Laplanche on the theory of generalized seduction and shows how each author both questions and enriches the thinking of the other.
