This event was organized by the Bridges Committee and the Canadian Journal of Psychoanalysis / Revue canadienne de psychoanalyse, in collaboration with the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society (CPS) and its local Montreal branches, the CPS Quebec English (QE) and the Société psychanalytique de Montréal (SPM). In keeping with the interest of the Journal/Revue in the bilingual character of psychoanalysis in Canada, the conference focused on current understandings of psychic trauma in order to explore the challenge of translation between different levels and systems of symbolic organization in the psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic relationship. The invited speaker, sponsored by an IPA grant, was Max Hernandez, one of the founders of the Peruvian Psychoanalytic Association. Dr. Hernandez received his psychoanalytic training in London, in association with D. W. Winnicott. Dominique Scarfone of Montreal was the discussant of his paper. The conference included an afternoon panel with a case presentation by Josette Garon (SPM), and contributions by Dianne Casoni (QE), Joseph Fernando (Toronto), Charles Levin (QE), and Martin Gauthier (SPM).
Max Hernandez developed four themes: dreams, the Sphinx, the life of Garcilaso de la Vega, and the question of trauma.
In his remarks on dreams, Hernandez elaborated on the contributions of Betty Joseph, Joseph Sandler, Masud Khan, Marion Milner, J.-B.
