The present paper is centered on a theory of endogenous stimulation derived from human and animal research. The theory begins with a model of endogenous stimulation connected to dream formation. It then moves to a theory of early development and focuses on adaptive and destructive envy. This developmental model is based on the theory of endogenous stimulation. In addition I explore anthropological findings about motherhood and hypothesize how these findings relate to the plasticity of human (and mammalian) development. The end of the paper shows how this theory illuminates concepts related to the psychoanalytic situation.
