In March 2011, the Société psychanalytique de Montréal (SPM) awarded Jean-Louis Langlois the title of member emeritus in recognition for his major contribution to the foundation of the Société, its scientific life, and the training of future analysts. This was an exceptional distinction. Only one other member had received it.
With others, I had the honour and pleasure to praise him for his accomplishments and to convey my esteem, my admiration, my recognition, my affection, and my deep friendship. Today, it is with great sadness that I pay him a last homage, in his absence.
I met Jean-Louis for the first time in the fall of 1969 at the foundation of the French branch of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society (Quebec French), which would later be renamed Société psychanalytique de Montréal. He was elected its first president. I accepted the position of secretary after everyone else had declined and having been assured that there would be little to do. How naive I was! Everything had to be done: scientific meetings and colloquiums, bylaws, finances, library, search for the French translations of Freud's works, mostly sold out at the time, conciliation or reconciliation of members with very diverse trainings, and much more.
