Gabrielle Clerk was born in Ottawa in June 1923 and died in Cowansville in December 2012. Gabrielle distinguished herself in both academic and clinical psychology and psychoanalysis throughout her career, which culminated in the position of training analyst in adult and child psychoanalysis in the Canadian Institute of Psychoanalysis and as professor emeritus at the University of Montreal. She earned her doctorate in psychology in 1953 specializing in the study of the Rorshach and projective processes and quickly became a respected teacher of several masters and doctorate candidates. Of great importance to psychoanalysis, she established links between psychoanalysis and the academic departments at the University of Montreal.
Gabrielle referred to her longstanding innovation and association in psychoanalysis as the Montreal Psychoanalytic Club acknowledging her debt to colleagues Taylor Statten, Hy Caplan, Irwin Disher, Andre Lussier, and, of course, to W. C. M. Scott, with whom she laboured to establish child analytic training in Montreal.
Gabrielle established and contributed to several administrative and community functions, both locally and internationally, including her university and hospital committee affiliations, the prevention of mental illness in Quebec, and Canadian Psychoanalysts against Nuclear Weapons.
