The following articles approach the question of the superego from distinct but converging angles. Both authors are concerned with the wider relevance of psychoanalytic theory to contemporary culture. Donald Carveth's “The Immoral Superego” was originally presented to the New York Psychoanalytic Society in 2013. Charles Levin's “A Shift in Psychical Accent: Freud's Witz a Century Later” was originally published in German.1 The authors felt that the two papers complemented each other rather well and have exchanged comments on each other's work.
