My gratitude for being asked to speak to you is increased because I have had a chance to listen to your last speaker, Henri Rey. I am indebted to him for many stimulating associations over the past 30 years. I am also looking forward to listening to your next speaker, Dr. Grotstein, who will tell you much more about the work of the late Wilfred Bion than I will, even though for more than 40 years I have admired his erudition. My own greatest stimulus stems from my analysis almost 50 years ago with Melanie Klein, who also gave Bion his start in analysis, as one of her pupils gave Rey his start. Melanie Klein did so much to give a new impetus to the understanding of phantasy2 and object relations, both within and outside the ego, or identified with it.
