With reference to the work of Claude Lévi-Strauss, this introduction frames Michel Grignon's prospectus on psychoanalytic infant observation in terms of the concept of fieldwork in social anthropology. These two fields run parallel in their respective emphases on experiential learning through training analysis, fieldwork, and infant observation. Both disciplines hold that the development of a genuine capacity for observation (seeing but also listening) is enhanced through a structured social encounter with the “Other” in their own intimate space, which further generates an encounter with the Other in oneself.
