The purpose of this presentation is to clarify and illustrate the psychoanalytic processes involved in Esther Bick's method of family infant observation, defined as a complex emotional, individual, and group experience. After briefly exposing the theoretical assumptions about the technique, the author gives numerous examples to demonstrate the three main modes of psychoanalytic learning involved in the method: the construction of and reflection on boundaries; the observation of pre-symbolic non-verbal communication; and transference and countertransference phenomena in the observation and the group interactions. The article concludes with two examples of narrative shared by candidates and two comments about their personal experience illustrating the theoretical part.
