This article discusses the phenomenon of rigid patients. They hold themselves rigidly, speak in a very controlled manner, and intensely fixate with the eyes. They seem so strong but under characteristic pressure, break down easily, usually with rage or despair or both. This article describes the structure of this personality type, characteristic defences, and requirements for treatment in psychoanalysis or psychodynamic psychotherapy. The goal is to ease rigidity and support growth and development without triggering breakdown.
