The literature demonstrates evidence of the value of psychoanalysis and long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy LTPP). In fact, studies show evidence of significant progressive improvement in patients' overall social functioning, including receding of symptoms of anxiety and depression, significant reduction of interpersonal problems and long-lasting positive effects, culminating in a better quality of life as a result of both. Further to her literature review, Muhlegg presents a detailed clinical illustration of a patient she followed in a Montreal-based, university-affiliated teaching hospital clinic, to show that an LTPP approach can lead to significant intrapsychic structural changes, including evidence of sustained remission of the original symptoms. Research design and psychometric measures are presented, followed by results. The data reveal gradual progression in multiple spheres of the patient's overall functioning.
