David Schaffelburg was born in Halifax Nova Scotia in August of 1947. That September his family moved to Montreal for his father to start teaching at Westmount Senior High School. Dave went to school in Westmount where he was student council president in 1963-64. He then went to Bishop's University in Sherbrooke, graduating in 1968, and entered McGill's School of Medicine, where he met classmate Angela Sheppard. Dave and Angela were married in 1970 and both graduated in 1972. He did his residency in Montreal in obstetrics and gynecology and joined the staff of St. Mary's Hospital, where he was department chief from 1983 to 1987, and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at McGill. While department chief, he trained in psychoanalysis and was elected in 1989 as a member of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society (CPS). In the fall of 1990 he moved to London, Ontario, where he started a full-time psychoanalytic practice; his wife, also a psychoanalyst, joined him in the summer of 1991.
Dave practiced there until his retirement in 2010. He was national secretary of the CPS from 2000 to 2004 and national president in 2006 and 2007. He continued serving on the national council until the spring of 2019. He was awarded a Citation of Merit in 2014.
Dave's Christian faith and his marriage were foundational. His joys included music, photography, the best wines he could afford, reading, collecting pens and Inuit art, and his Maine Coon cat, Blue.
Dave suffered a heart attack and died July 11, 2023, a few weeks before his 76th birthday. He is survived by his wife, Angela, brother Paul (Yvonne), sister Laura Taylor (Tony), and his wife's nephew Scott Hayman (Brenda) and niece Debbie Strikwerda (Ted).
