The theme of this paper has been the significance of the function of shame in understanding delinquent behavior. Adolescent culture is largely a shame culture. The many influences on the adolescent, making him especially vulnerable to shame emotions, impel him to seek ways of compensation. The most prevalent form of this is an attempt to forge a heroic self image. Aspects of the delinquent role, though opposed by dictates of conscience, nevertheless exert great
allure because of their many face saving and ego enhancing possibilities.
