It is the contention of this presentation that normal and abnormal personalities evolve from their phantasies of the internal objects comprising them. Normal, neurotic, narcissistic, and perhaps even borderline personalities seem to evolve from a dichotomy of
internal objects which are either perverse and/or diabolical on one hand and beneficent and helpful on the other. This dichotomy constitutes the paradigm for all psychic conflict and is essentially a theological one—between good and evil. Schizophrenics, on the contrary, have no confidence in their capacity for boundary formation and therefore form unstable objects of great elasticity which delusionally transform from the violent pressure of abnormal projective identification and abnormal splitting to constitute the paradigm of a psychic defect.
