THIS ISSUE OF CONTEMPORARY PSYCHOANALYSIS is dedicated to the memory of Max Deutscher (1916-1979), teacher, supervisor, analyst and colleague, as well as a founding editor of this journal. In addition to several pieces by and about Max, we have decided to commemorate his memory by publishing a series of invited articles concerning object relations theories.1 Max taught the course at the William Alanson White Institute on object relations theory, and it occupied a central place in his theoretical and clinical concerns. We feel that the best way to express our appreciation for Max's intellectual curiosity, personal enthusiasm, and dedication to psychoanalysis, both theoretical and technical, is to help to clarify and articulate important issues within this major area of contemporary psychoanalytic thought.
