THIS PAPER WAS READ at the March 13, 1962 meeting of the Association of Psychoanalytic Psychologists. Dr. Rose Spiegel was the discussant. Although Max intended to complete it for publication, it was found among his papers in less than final form. It is published here with minor editorial changes.
Of the several unfinished manuscripts that Max left behind—on anniversary reactions, on work, on neutrality, on post-partum psychopathology, this paper on fathering stands out. Susan Deutscher, Max's wife, commented that the topic was one of his favorites. After his death, the paper on fathering seemed to reflect something special about Max, the fusion of intelligence and wit which let him make pithy observations on people and life that made one both laugh and think. In those who were susceptible, he inspired an enduring respect, love and loyalty. He was a gifted teacher.
In addition to providing us with a vivid memory of Max's unique expression and observation, this paper has a substantive importance. Written
