ERWIN SINGER WAS A CHALLENGING, stimulating teacher and supervisor who valued original thinking. As a clinician he was particularly interested in the "real" relationship between patient and analyst, and explored how this could be utilized to facilitate the analytic work. He was willing to question the traditional and to explore new ways for the analyst to use himself authentically and courageously. This issue of Contemporary Psychoanalysis is dedicated to his memory and to his example of openness, and the active responsiveness he tried to foster in his teaching, supervision, and clinical work.
