AS AN ENTHUSIASTIC READER OF Dr. Goldberg's work, I've been consistently impressed with his capacity to make good sense psychoanalytically and humanly, and with the fact that his ideas resonate very closely with my own despite our differences in orientation. My concern in responding to his paper was that my basic agreement with Dr. Goldberg's clinical insight into the personality trait he is describing might lead to a wishy washy discussion. I've therefore done my best to try and detail how my own view diverges as well as where it overlaps.
